BEST Announces License and Technology Transfer Contract for 2G High-Temperature Superconductors to Rosatom

May 23, 2012

HANAU, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 23, 2012-- Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies, Inc. (BEST) announced today a large-scale technology transfer contract for its Bruker HTS GmbH subsidiary to license and transfer know-how for second generation (2G) YBCO ceramic tape high temperature superconductors (HTS) to a subsidiary of the Russian state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom. The total contract value exceeds $25 million, and BEST revenue is expected in various increments and milestones over an approximately two-year period.

BEST has granted a license to Rosatom to make and sell within the Russian Federation certain 2G HTS conductors, which are expected to be manufactured in Russia using BEST's proprietary pulsed laser deposition technology and process know-how. In addition to providing a license, BEST will also provide training and education services as well as a complete 2G HTS pilot production line to Rosatom, with expected deliveries commencing in 2013. The pilot line is expected initially to be set up and commissioned at the Bruker HTS facility in Alzenau, Germany, and then transferred to the Kurtchatow Institute near Moscow, Russia.

Dr. Burkhard Prause, President and CEO of BEST, said: "We are very pleased that Rosatom has chosen BEST's unique and proprietary 2G HTS technology to introduce state-of-the-art YBCO HTS technology in the Russian Federation. The parties also expect to continue with subsequent scientific and technical collaborations in the further development of 2G HTS technology and its applications, particularly in energy and smart-grid markets."

Dr. Viacheslav Pershukov, Rosatom Deputy Director - Head of innovation management block, stated: "This is a unique opportunity for the two companies to develop this key energy technology in two large markets and to potentially join forces for further development of HTS-based applications and devices."

Dr. Reinhard Dietrich, Managing Director of Bruker HTS GmbH, commented further: "BEST is delighted to enable Rosatom to begin producing and selling HTS tape in Russia. We intend to continue scaling up our own HTS pilot line in Alzenau, Germany while simultaneously assisting Rosatom in establishing its HTS capabilities. This license and technology transfer is a historic event in HTS, and affirms that the YBCO tape process path selected at BEST has outstanding specifications. The collaboration between BEST and Rosatom is expected to provide benefits to both parties and accelerate the adoption of HTS in various end-market applications."
